The Scenic Route to Flåm: A Journey Through Wonders

The journey from Bergen to Flåm is a visual feast, offering stunning views at every turn. Here's a suggested route with key viewpoints:

Bergen to Voss (E16): This initial stretch takes you through scenic countryside. Consider a stop at the Tvindefossen waterfall, a beautiful twin waterfall cascading down a mountainside.

Voss to Gudvangen (E16): This part of the journey is particularly dramatic, as you descend towards the Nærøyfjord (a UNESCO World Heritage site).

Stalheimskleiva: This incredibly steep and winding road (only open during summer months and not suitable for large vehicles) descends from Stalheim down to the Nærøydalen valley. The views from the top are breathtaking. If Stalheimskleiva is closed, the modern road will take you down to Gudvangen.

Gudvangen to Flåm (Ferry or Road): From Gudvangen, you have two options:

  • Nærøyfjord Ferry: This is highly recommended! The ferry journey through the narrow Nærøyfjord is an unforgettable experience. The dramatic cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and charming farms create a truly magical atmosphere.

  • Road (E16/Fv241): If the ferry isn't running or you prefer to drive, the road also offers beautiful views, though not as dramatic as the ferry.
