Chasing the Aurora:

Chasing Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights is an epic adventure. This guide will help you plan a truly unforgettable adventure, combining the romance of your special day with the awe-inspiring beauty of the Aurora Borealis.

Many couples ask us to combine their adventure wedding in the fjords with a visit to see the aurora borealis. Although we do get auroras in Aurland, they occur when there is a polar storm of K.P. 5 or more. During these two years there is a lot of solar activity from the sun and we are expected to see them regularly. Indeed many locals have had some epic encounters recently.

We also recommend taking a trip north for your honeymoon for a special aurora hunting tour. Our favourite it flying from Bergen to Bodo where you can cross over to the insane Lofoten Islands by car ferry. There are loads of opportunities for Insta-worthy photo tours and the adventure of a lifetime.

Getting to Norway: Flights to Bergen

Your journey to a Norwegian wedding adventure often begins in Bergen. Bergen Airport, Flesland (BGO), is well-connected to major European hubs. Several airlines offer direct flights from cities like Amsterdam, Copenhagen, London, and Reykjavik. From further afield, you’ll likely connect through one of these European cities or Oslo Airport (OSL).

Check with airlines like SAS, Widerøe, Norwegian, KLM, and others for schedules and availability.

Reaching the Northern Lights: Flights to Bodø

Bodø is the ideal place to start your aurora adventure with a short flight from Bergen. You might even see the auroras from the plane like our founder Paul did. It is a key gateway to the Lofoten Islands and a great starting point for your Aurora hunt. Additionally you can fly from Sogndal which is closer but with fewer flights.

  • Flights from Sogndal (SOG) to Bodø (BOO): Widerøe operates flights from Sogndal Airport to Bodø Airport. These are often connecting flights, so be sure to check schedules and layover times.

  • Flights from Bergen (BGO) to Bodø (BOO): Several airlines, including SAS and Norwegian, offer flights from Bergen Airport to Bodø Airport. These flights are often direct and offer a faster travel option.

Bodø to Lofoten: The Ferry to Moskenes

From Bodø, you'll take a scenic car ferry to Moskenes, the southernmost tip of the Lofoten Islands. You can rent your car at Bodø airport and travel with the car ferry, or you can rent a car in Moskenes upon arrival:

  • Bodø to Moskenes Ferry: The ferry journey takes approximately 3-4 hours and offers stunning views of the Vestfjord and the dramatic Lofoten landscape. Check the ferry schedule with operators like Torghatten Nord as times vary depending on the season. You can bring a rental car on the ferry.

Lofoten's beaches offer incredible opportunities for Northern Lights viewing. Here are a few recommendations:

  • Uttakleiv Beach: Known for its dramatic rock formations and stunning views.

  • Haukland Beach: A beautiful white-sand beach with turquoise waters.

  • Skagsanden Beach: Another stunning beach with dramatic mountain backdrops.

These beaches offer open skies and minimal light pollution, making them ideal for observing the Aurora.
